I like on the table,

the light of a bottle

The Estate

IN THE HEART OF THE MAREMMA

The Sassoregale Estate is located in the province of Grosseto, in the municipality of Campagnatico, at the eastern end intersected by the Ombrone River. This is the last uncontaminated area of Italy, a place where Tuscany is still wild and seductive, with a landscape untouched by man. The vineyards overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea, just a few kilometres away as the crow flies, in the centre of a plain surrounded by hills, with higher ground stretching towards Montalcino behind it.

The winery is located at Campagnatico, in the lands of Pieve Vecchia. This avantgarde architectural complex was designed by the Cini Boeri studio and is immersed in an area of enormous potential and unspoiled natural riches.

An ultra-modern winery, a temple of design at the service of the surrounding countryside, which is therefore capable of showing wine lovers around the world the uniqueness of the Maremma’s terroir and that of its organic vineyards. The key factor in this project is sustainability: Pieve Vecchia respects the environment, with which it is integrated in an extremely natural way, and it contributes to the development of its area by highlighting indigenous varieties, but with an eye to the future.

Vermentino Maremma Toscana DOC

Technical Information

The grapes are harvested at full technological and aromatic ripeness to enhance their aromatic potential and structure. Off-the-skins vinification begins with the soft-pressing of the grapes and continues with fermentation in steel tanks, where the wine stays in contact with the lees for about five months in order to acquire further nuances of flavour.

Tasting Note

A bright straw yellow heralds the intense, elegant bouquet where the dominant citrus and white-fleshed fruits are threaded with appealing hints of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate it unfolds over an intriguingly agile structure nicely paced by a well-sustained savouriness.

Food Matchings

Ideal with vegetable or fish-based starters and excellent with all saltwater fish preparations, including first and main courses served with aromatic herbs or spices. Perfect with Catalan-style lobster.

Technical Information

The grapes are harvested when fully ripe, destemmed and fermented in steel. Maceration lasts for around ten days and during this time, pumping over, punching down and délestage are alternated. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine is briefly rested in steel tanks before the true ageing process begins in two different types of wood: Sangiovese in large barrels and cement tanks, the international varieties in French oak barriques. After around a year, the final blend is created which brings out the natural balance of the components and the wine’s distinctive character.

Tasting Note

Deep ruby red in colour, the wine boasts an enticing bouquet of blackberries and pomegranate, enhanced by hints of white pepper, sweet spices, aromatic herbs and balsamic notes. On the palate, it is juicy and dynamic with vibrant tannins, and a savoury quality that accentuates the progression of flavours and its luscious texture, which is smooth without being cloying and which has a finish enlivened by hints of vanilla, juniper and liquorice. This is an energetic and precise wine that truly expresses the terroir and the different grape varieties from which it is made.

Food Matchings

The wine’s vibrant structure, savoury freshness and well-integrated tannins, make it extremely versatile. It pairs well with meaty pasta dishes and flavourful vegetarian foods, but really comes into its own when served with red meats however they are cooked: roasted braised, smoked or barbecued. Its savoury character and spicy notes also make it a perfect companion to exotic dishes from South American or Asian cuisines.

Poderalta Riserva

Maremma Toscana DOC

Technical Information

The grapes are picked when they are fully ripe. After crushing and destemming, the must that has been obtained ferments at a controlled temperature in stainless steel vats, with attentive maceration on the skins and appropriate pumping over anddélestageoperations. The wine thus produced matures subsequently for about 18 months in French oakbarriques.

Tasting Note

The very deep red color is a prelude to intriguing scents of black berry fruits and spicy and balsamic notes. On the palate it is both powerful and aristocratically refined, with multi-layered, complex fruit, tight, virile tannins and an amazingly long, rich aftertaste.

Food Matchings

This is a wine that is ideal with meat, whether char-grilled or slowly stewed with spices and sauces. It is splendid with game (particularly of the “furred” variety) or relatively mature cheeses.

La Maremma

La Maremma

Maremma is the last wild corner of Italy, the area that remained isolated from human activity longest. A marshland for centuries, and a natural refuge for many animal species, it always eluded farming. Even today it is aloof and sometimes rugged, modelled by the explosive force of nature. While the great 20th-century reforms made thousands of hectares available, they did not manage to alter the natural environment radically. Its thick and often impenetrable scrubland is still inhabited by wild boar, roe deer and fallow deer, and horses are still an invaluable means of transport for venturing into its woods and along its coastal dunes.

It is an environment where sunny plains alternate with rolling hills and meadows, followed by particularly verdant woodland, where broom, strawberry trees, juniper, myrtle, heather, brambles, cypresses, cork oaks and pines triumph in a succession of colours and perfumes. However, this still untamed land is an incredible reserve of culture and traditions that are slowly, but constantly, enhancing their heritage. It is the new frontier of Italian gourmet food and wine, which probably remains the most authentic and genuine one.
