Tenuta Sassoregale lies inland in the hill country of Maremma, where the rolling landscape forms an amphitheatre that slopes gently down to the flatlands and on to the sea. It is a setting that alternates sun-scorched tableland, softly curving hills, meadows and luxuriant woodland.
The colours of this thrilling landscape range from the pale green of the vineyards to silver-flecked olive groves and the deeply verdant Mediterranean scrubland, where the glorious sensory medley proffers the fragrances of broom, arbutus, juniper, myrtle, heather, brambles, cypresses, cork oaks and pines in a stunning visual, and above all headily scented, tableau set between the blue of the sea and the ochre earth of Tuscany’s inland hills.
History has left its mark in the villages, fortresses, castles, towers, walls and fortified buildings that denote a past stretching back thousands of years to the Etruscans. Through the Middle Ages and right up to modern times, the area has stayed firmly attached to farming traditions and has been especially attentive to the defence of the environment. Here, in the municipality of Civitella Paganico in the province of Grosseto, Tenuta Sassoregale extends over some 38 hectares, of which 30 are under vine, on the first hilly eastern outcrops of the broad Ombrone river plain.
The climate is very Mediterranean. Various factors contribute to ripen the grapes to perfection, above all the constant breezes that temper the summer heat, cooling the plants and at the same time enabling them to enjoy particularly high exposure to sunlight.
This not only encourages photosynthesis; it also intensifies the development of aroma compounds in the berries, compounds that will play a crucial part in giving the wines their special character.
